An Outdoor Deck with a Cover

While the Las Vegas heat can be unbearable, it can also create beautiful scenery. So, it can be advantageous to build a deck that looks at the skies. Of course, the deck will need a cover to provide shade when it is not best suited to heat exposure. This deck can also be a hangout place for the family or a main gathering point when you have a party. Then, you can add features like a BBQ or drought-resistant plants to help it stand out further. The heat at times may be too difficult to walk in, but sitting under a shade with a clear blue sky could be the perfect remedy for the day.

Opt for Artificial Turf Instead of Traditional Grass

Grass can be hard to maintain with the Las Vegas climate. It will require an immense amount of water, and sometimes, the heat may be so intense that it does not matter how much water you put down; it still will not grow. To avoid brown grass, you may opt for artificial turf. Traditionally, turf is a low-maintenance alternative to natural grass; it does not need water or fertilizer to look green year-round. The artificial turf may require water, but only when you wish to wash off a mark or debris. But otherwise, regardless of the temperature, it will ensure a year-round green yard.

Desert-Friendly Succulents

Cactus is the plant most synonymous with Las Vegas and Nevada in general. It can survive in desert conditions and be a beautiful landscape addition. But these are not the only plants that can survive in desert-like conditions. Some include Gasteralow ‘White Wings’ or Sederveria ‘Blue Elf.’ These plants require very little watering and maintenance, which makes them the best to add to a location that often experiences desert-like conditions.

Utilize Rocks and Boulders

Landscapes do not only have to be composed of plants; you can also use other things like rocks or boulders throughout the landscape. Using rocks and boulders does not mean simply placing rocks in the middle of a landscape. Instead, you can use the rocks to form things like a walkway or outline the border of your landscape. The important thing about these options is that they are low maintenance. Once you place them down, nothing else needs to occur except occasionally picking up debris; no watering or weeding is necessary.

Install a Water Feature

While Las Vegas may experience extreme heat at times, this is not year-round, and it is possible to maintain a standing body of water in your landscape. Some options include a birdbath or even a swimming pool, which will come in handy during the hotter times of the year. Water features also provide a peaceful element to your landscape and can act as a centerpiece wherever you place them.

Add Lighting

Lighting is the best way to help certain aspects of your landscape stand out. You can add lights along a driveway, in front of plants or trees, or even along the deck or patio. You can even consider making them different colors at different locations or putting them on a rotation. These colors can help establish the mood and provide a fun aspect to the lights.

Add Hanging Plants Across the Landscape

While adding certain plants to your landscape may not be a practical option when they need to take root in the ground. There remains the option of utilizing hanging plants, which may require a little more maintenance than if you choose to have drought-resistant plants placed into the ground. However, this maintenance is minimal as hanging plants are typically small in size and thus do not require too much water or trimming. Another plus is they can help to provide a little more color and life to your landscape. Drought-resistant plants can come in many different colors, but they limit your options. Hanging plants are a healthy alternative with many options to choose from.
